The Journey To #REFLEXPHILLY (@PubWebb, 10/10/15) – A Phlight Retrospective

REFLEX-TU-HOMECOMING-2015

It may not seem like it (since Philly Will is Chris Vance’s official performance DJ), but Vance and PW have not rocked a monthly event together since the end of 2013’s “Underground Phresh” (UP). A lot has happened for both Philly Will & Chris Vance since – and with #reFLEXphilly (Pub Webb, 1527 Cecil B. Moore) on deck for Saturday, it’s a good time to refresh the people on what these two have been up to since then.

In the fall of 2013, Philly Will & Chris Vance made their way to Atlanta for the A3C Festival. Yusuf Muhammad (Veteran Freshman) organized the first #PhillyToA3C trip – with Phlight School being amongst a group of 50 invited to go as official Philadelphia representatives. While this was momentous for PS as a whole, they were down there for different reasons. Philly Will was enlisted as the DJ for E-Hos & I-Know Brasco – and while Vance wound up performing alongside E-Hos – he also wound up hosting the event alongside Don Cannon.

Philly Will became Pier Entertainment’s official event DJ in the summer of 2013, shortly after the last edition of UP. He also joined Near Dark Entertainment (by way of DJ Patrice McBride) later that year. These dual opportunities allowed Will to invade Atlantic City, scoring DJ gigs at Harrah’s, Bally’s, Showboat & Caesar’s – even spending a summer alongside the legendary DJ Jay Ski at Bally’s infamous Beach Bar. He also backed Philly/Atlanta artist Newz Huddle when he opened for Future at the Trocadero in 2014.

Chris Vance has certainly kept busy while his DJ has been hard at work. A dominant year, performance-wise, saw him selected for one of four Philly Hip Hop Awards cyphers in 2013. Vance even tried some new things musically, venturing into jazz with Veteran Freshman’s “Who Got The Jazz” series. His tribute to Miles Davis and Nas earned him an All-Star nod and a performance on the main stage at World Cafe Live. Since 2013, however, he has hosted multiple events around the city, from showcases to parties. He was the only host involved in the GL Productions x Silk City “Thursday’s @ Silk” run in 2014, as well as performing at a number of large venues. Vance also released his newest full length project, “Doom City: Last of The Best” in 2014, with three different visual singles (Last of The Best, When The L Is Gone & Every Single Day feat. Chill Moody & Jacqueline Constance) leading the way. Unfortunately, Vance has not been able to perform since December 2014, as he tore both of his quadriceps.

The original Phlight Pilots continue to march ahead – Vance still has not missed an edition of The Bounce (alongside the Crossfaded Bacon DJ duo of Bo Bliz & Emynd), in spite of the injury, and has even continued hosting other select events. He also just recently wrapped his #MeyygensStereo series, an audio dedication to his sister. #reFLEXphilly signifies his first foray back into regular physical activity. More “Doom City” vids are soon coming soon – including visuals for Drawlin (feat. Ground Up), Call On Me and Concussion. Vance’s major focus now is on his upcoming “Flashpoint” EP with DJ Bear One, and his next full length solo project, “William’s Rebellion”. Philly Will has notched even more residencies under his belt, becoming the resident DJ at Center Bar at Valley Forge Casino. He’s also signed on as the resident DJ with The Gathering, the longest running hip-hop party in Philadelphia (19 years), hosted by Ai Que and Fame Vasquez.

Tabbed to close out Temple Homecoming 2015, the Phlight duo are amped to show fellow alumni, current students, local artists and intrigued locals what they can do. Come witness Chris Vance and Philly Will’s worlds collide again as Phlight School and Pub Webb present REFLEX!!!!

Meyygens-Stereo-Mind-Right

“Roc-A-Fella was definitely VERY high on Meg’s list, and while Bleek may not have been her favorite (that was either Sigel or Jay… Depended on what day it was), this was unquestionably one of her favorite records. I couldn’t let this series go without jumpin’ on this joint.

Got my mind right, money right, ready for war! Memph Bleek is (murda) yeah I told you before!”

The #MEYYGENSSTEREO closes with a bang, decimating the Memphis Bleek “Mind Right” instrumental after Nico The Beast announces Vance’s induction into 30 & Over League!

Meyygens-Stereo-I-Shot-Ya (1)

“The record had Meyygen written all over it. I wasn’t sure if she had heard it yet, but once I mentioned it, it was clear. She knew plenty about it LOL. LL was definitely one of the heavy hitters, one of Meg’s favorites. This was the choice I went with. It even started in sinister fashion

Mr. Smith, you want a hit? Gimme an hour plus a pen and a pad, B…”

Vance re-creates the original posse-cut atmosphere, recruiting West Philly veteran E-Hos, newcomer Cain Kerner, North Philly RCM general I-Know Brasco and the returning Mz. Lynx to body the timeless LL Cool J classic I Shot Ya!!

Meyygens-Stereo-Luchini

“Definitely in the ‘We Only Knew The Hook’ folder of songs we knew, me and Meg always snapped out when we heard this hook. Neither of us knew any other words to it. I went back for this song in my older years, still one of my favorite cuts!

This is it, what! Luchini pouring from the sky, let’s get rich, what!”

Week 8 of #MEYYGENSSTEREO sees Vance enlist fellow Philly emcees Ai-Que (The Gathering) and Fonte Cruise to level the Luchini instrumental!!

#MEYYGENSSTEREO | Chris Vance – All I Need (Week 7)

Meyygens-Stereo-All-I-Need-2

“In what would be my first real exposure to Method Man, this record just grabs you from the beginning. 1994 was really the year I started to listen for myself musically, but obviously I still looked to my sister for dope records. And this one… Wow… And the video? Smh. I legit thought Method was crazy.

You’re allllllll, I neeeeeeeed, to get byyyyyyy…”

Week 7 of #MEYYGENSSTEREO sees Vance demolish the unforgettable Method Man & Mary J. Blige instrumental!!

#MEYYGENSSTEREO | Chris Vance – Fu-Gee-La (Week 6)

Meyygens-Stereo-Week-6-Fu-Gee-La-1

“The beat was so melodic. The Fugees always seem to have these infectious records. The Score would prove to be more influential than any of us could imagine, and this lead single had me and my sister hooked… It was also a glimpse of the future, as I would eventually become a die-hard Teena Marie fan…

Oh lalala… It’s the way that we come when we’re doing our thing!! Oh lalala… It’s the natural style that the refugees bring…”

Vance rumbles the classic Fu-Gee-La instrumental for Week 6 of #MEYYGENSSTEREO!!

#MEYYGENSSTEREO | Chris Vance – I Got It Made (Week 5)

textgram_1439387179

“My name is Special Ed and I’m a super duper star.. Every other month I get a brand new car…

Meg knew EVERY SINGLE WORD to this record. One of my earliest memories. The year Mook was born – 1989. Meg was 7, I was 3. I don’t remember much of anything from that year, except her and her pigtails bouncing around to this song. I remember vividly wondering what potatoed alligator souffle was… LOL”

Vance tackles arguably his sister’s favorite record for the birthday edition of #MEYYGENSSTEREO!

#MEYYGENSSTEREO | Chris Vance – Ugly (Week 4)

Meyygens-Stereo-Ugly-1

“Meg was never really that hype for Eminem (outside of Jay-Z’s “Renegade”, which is one of her favorite records), so I was VERY surprised when she turned the radio up for this. The last white rapper she was hype for was Vanilla Ice (and you better believe Ice Ice Baby was very seriously considered for this series, lol). Southern white guy? Didn’t see that coming… This beat was LEGENDARY tho…

It’s gettin’ uglyyyy, uglyyyyyyy, uglaaaaaaaaaay!!!”

Vance zig-zags across the Bubba Sparxxx / Timbaland classic, and even leaves in the “Get Your Freak On” beat-switch as an homage to his sister. Week 4 of #MEYYGENSSTEREO!!!

#MEYYGENSSTEREO | Chris Vance – Rosa Parks (Week 3)

IMG_20150729_143602

“It’s 1998. One of the last videos I ever recorded on tape. I was very guarded with my VHS tapes, cause my mom would get pissed if I used too many. But once I caught Meg watching this video, I was hooked immediately. Not too mention that crazy ass harmonica solo at the end…

Ah ha, hush that fuss… Everybody move to the back of the bus…”

Vance goes the distance on the timeless Outkast record, Rosa Parks, for Week 3 of #MEYYGENSSTEREO!
